If you're planning your first trip to Vancouver, there are a few things I, as someone who's lived here for 15 years, wish someone had told me before I arrived.

1. The weather changes fast β€” and an umbrella is your best friend

Vancouver is famous for rain, but the truth is more nuanced: the weather can shift from sunny to rainy (and back to sunny) within a few hours, especially in fall and spring.

2. Tipping isn't optional here

Unlike in many other countries, in Canada a 15-20% tip at restaurants is expected, not an extra. The same goes for taxis and hair/beauty services.

3. Distances look shorter on the map than they feel in practice

Whistler, for example, is "only" 120km from downtown Vancouver β€” but the drive can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic and the time of year.

4. See what the view looks like from the top of Grouse Mountain

Here's a quick glimpse that captures the feeling of reaching the summit:

5. Book private tours in advance, especially in summer

Between June and September, Vancouver's high season, good guides fill up their schedules quickly β€” especially around holidays. Cecilia next to the private tour van
